Teacher Spotlight – Samantha Utley

Throughout the hockey season, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Future Goals team select a Teacher of the Month to recognize his or her efforts utilizing the Penguins Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program in the classroom.  Teachers are rewarded with tickets to a Penguins game, recognition on the Pens social media account and a ride on the Zamboni!

During the month of February, STEAM instructor, Samantha Utley from Duquesne City School District was selected as Teacher of the Month and attended the February 15th game.

Future Goals- Hockey Scholar was first introduced to Samantha at a teacher professional development night at PPG Paints arena in the fall of 2016.  She immediately implemented the program in K-6 starting with the after-school program.  For some students this was their first experience with the game of hockey.  Sam thought the program would be an excellent way for her after school students to expand their learning and would help create unique projects outside of the program focused on STEM.

Sam is passionate about helping her students in every aspect of their lives.  She has also helped with several Future Goals-Hockey Scholar workshops around the county to support new educators as they implement the program. Sam loves sharing and celebrating her students’ successes. The Penguins and the Future Goals team are so appreciative of teachers like Sam, for always putting her students first and finding ways for students to expand their math and science knowledge outside of the classroom.
