Tell us about yourself!

I started as a Special Education Teacher. I was told by a professor that I would be, “The eyes of those who can’t see and the ears of those who can’t hear.” I was hooked. I knew this was what I was meant to do. I have taught grades PreK-6 during my career. I have spent about half of this time teaching special education or working as a reading specialist, the other half has been spent teaching K, 4th, or 5th grade. I have a Masters Degree in teaching reading. I love to share good literature with students, nothing feels better than making a student a “reader”. My favorite subjects are Science and Social Studies. Kids love the hands-on work and I love watching them enjoy all of their learning. Prior to having kids I was a cheerleading coach, now I support my children’s sports. I participate in the local Booster Club, I teach in my church, I have served on the local Early Education Board, and spent 3 years tutoring kids in China on-line. Everything I do revolves around kids.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

We live in an area where the kids LOVE hockey. This program allows them to attach a sport they love with STEM. Hockey is all about STEM. The angles of shooting , the discussion of friction, the way a rink is designed, use of potential and kinetic energy. I teach 5th grade so this is a challenging program for them, but I introduce it every year as a reward to work on at various times. They really enjoy it.

If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?

This may sound crazy, but I am not an athlete, I’m a performer at heart. I would be the mascot! You get to be crazy and have fun, and nobody can see you under the costume.
