Blackhawks – January Teacher of the Month!

The Chicago Blackhawks would like to honor Jon Popowich of Skinner North Elementary! He has been chosen as the #HockeyScholar January Teacher of the Month.

What grade/subject do you teach and how long have you been teaching?

As a PE teacher, I have the joy of teaching most of the grades in our k-8 school. This is my 11th year teaching overall and my 9th at Skinner North.

How are you using Hockey Scholar in your classroom?

We have been using Hockey Scholar as a way to connect our students with the “why” and “how’ in the game of hockey. Since our school is an academically advanced school, our kids often seek to understand why things are the way that they are and it is a great way to demonstrate for them why these things happen

What was your students’ reaction to the course? Did they enjoy learning STEM with the Blackhawks?

Our students love the course. They love to understand why things in the game of hockey happen as they do. It is also a way to combine cross-curricular lessons in a PE setting!

Who is your favorite Blackhawks player?

My favorite player is Jonathan Toews. His team leadership is great to watch!

Who in your life inspired you to become a teacher?

My high school football coach and teacher, Mr. Torres, inspired me to become a teacher myself. You could always see his passion for teaching and inspiring kids which made me realize it was the path I was meant to take.

Would you be a defenseman, forward, or goalie?

I would be a defenseman. I feel they are always there to support the other players.
