Columbus Blue Jackets – 2019 Teacher Highlight

Congrats to Amber Rogers of Leawood Elementary for being highlighted as an exceptional Blue Jackets Hockey Scholar educator!

What grade/subject do you teach and how long have you been teaching?

5th grade ELA/Social Studies/Science This is my 21st year with the Columbus City Schools

Why did you decide to become a teacher and what is your favorite part about teaching?

Teaching has always been my passion since I was in Kindergarten. I love working with children and seeing their excitement when they understand a new concept.

What is your favorite part of Future Goals and how are you using it in your classroom?

I was an avid sports player when I was younger, so combing sports and learning interested me. It is fun to see the math and science behind the scenes to make it all work.

What was your students’ reaction to the course?

They love it, especially since you can explore the locker room and see some of the players. They didn’t realize how much math and science went into it.

If you played hockey, would you rather be a goalie or a goal scorer?

The Goalie, I love the added pressure of stopping all the shots on goal.

Who is your favorite NHL player and why?

That is a tough question. I have so many!! Cam Atkinson because he is small, but tough.

How else are you involved in your community? Please share any additional information about yourself?

With teaching I volunteer to teach on Saturday and give extra help to my students. We donate to local charities (juvenile diabetes, humane society).
