Tell us about yourself!

HIII!! My name is Alfredo Crossman-Chavez Jr. I am the founding Athletic Director and PE teacher for KIPP Corazon Academy Upper School. This is my 6th year of teaching PE and 3rd year being a Athletic Director. I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to work with the youth. My track n field coaches had a huge impact on me growing up Walter Larkins Jr. and Aubrey Sheffield. They weren’t just coaches but mentors, father figures, and family. I wanted to do what they did for me and other athletes to the youth. What I love most about teaching is seeing students smile. Whether that’s because they accomplished something they’ve been trying to do, they enjoyed my class, a conversation we had, a joke being told, or they’re just happy. My happiness comes from them being happy. As a Athletic Director I try my best to bring experiences, opportunities, and partnerships to our school. Currently I have 10 students involved in a program called SRLA where we train students to complete a marathon. Also I am partnering with Nike East Los bringing running clinics to our school. My future project is having another 31 day mile challenge using the Nike Run Club app to record our mileage. This promotes healthy activities, creates memories with family, and friendly competition amongst schools. I am reaching out to organizations, brands, and sports team to get prizes donated for top students with milage.

Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?

I love the entire LA Kings team. My first ever hockey game I watched live was the LA Kings! I remember they played the buffalo sabers 2 years ago pre-covid. I just loved the teamwork aspect. It takes a entire team to score a goal and to defend and I love that about hockey. I’ve always been a team oriented person. I rather help someone score the goal than score it myself.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

I want to say students being able to create avatars of themselves that actually look like them. Representations is a real thing and when I seen a avatar that looked like me I really almost cried because that doesn’t happen all the time!

If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?

I would say goalie! I love to defend. I take pride in someone saying they couldn’t score on me.
