Tell us about yourself!

My name is Scott McMurtry and I teach Grade 6 at Warren Elementary School. This year I teach all subjects except French, Music, and Health. I have been a teacher for 21 years and have spent my entire career here at Warren. I became a teacher after being inspired by my favourite teacher Mr. Bolt who taught me in Grade 5. I try to model my teaching after him because he was firm but fair with his students, had a great sense of humour, and he loved sports! My favourite thing about teaching is seeing my students grow as individuals. I love when they come back to visit and tell me about all of their accomplishments in high school and beyond. In my community I coach and play hockey. My 2 kids keep me very busy with all of their sports as well! I am also involved in a golf league.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™ program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

In Warren many students play and watch hockey so this program is a fantastic way to get them engaged in learning curriculum through something they love. I used to work at the old Winnipeg arena on the ice crew so I love telling my students stories about painting the lines and logos while they are doing the Math course. STEM is all around us so it’s cool to see kids realise that there is a reason for learning what they do in school.

Who is your favorite NHL® Player and why?

Josh Morrissey is my favourite player. His edgework and positional play is the best in the league in my opinion. He can do it all… skate, score, pass, defend, lead. Complete package.

If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?

I have played hockey since I was 4 years old. I played defense in my competitive years and was known for my strong skating, physical play, and vision. I loved playing defense because I was able to make an impact on the game every time I was on the ice!
