Boston Bruins December 2023 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Suzanne Slater and I have been teaching in both a traditional classroom and in the outdoor education setting for 17 years+. I teach Science and Study Skills to Grades 5/6 at St. John the Baptist School in Peabody, MA. I have always loved to teach because even though we may never receive thanks we make a difference in the lives of our students. I have helped numerous kids try to understand academic concepts as well as social and emotional health concepts that they need to succeed. Seeing the light bulb go on is one of the most amazing gifts I could receive. I coordinate & supervise a week long trip to Nature’s Classroom for Grade 6. In the community, I am actively involved with my two children ages 11 and 14 and help out community members, friends and family.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Wayne Gretzky has always been my favorite NHL player. He is the true “great” player. As a child growing up in Canada, his name was always in the news. He exuded what it means to be a leader and a great athlete.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
The Future Goals program is a fantastic way for my students to review topics that they have already learned while learning new facts and topics. The game design is captivating for the kids and allows them to be actively involved in working with the terminology they are learning. Hockey involves forces, Newton’s Laws of Motion, States & Characteristics of Matter and so much more.
