Edmonton Oilers April 2022 Teacher of the Month – Daryl Puzey
Tell us about yourself!
I have been teaching since 2006. I have taught all grades but currently teach grade 6 math, science, PE, and Rec. Ed. Before teaching, I was a professional hockey coach in Canada, Switzerland, and England. It was my job as a coach, that lead me to understand that teaching and coaching brought me great joy — it is the amazing people that you meet through teaching, that make it so rewarding. This year I volunteered to coach the boy’s volleyball team at my school, and I also help my step-son’s hockey team with power skating. Since I was a young child, I have been a die-hard Oiler’s fan and can’t wait to see them win another Stanley Cup. Together, with my family, we don’t miss a game!
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Paul Coffey… I grew up watching him win the Stanley Cup and modeled my game and my skating after him. I also really enjoy watching Leon Draisaitl, who is a true gentleman MVP of the league.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
I love how Future Goals connects to some many different parts of the curriculum. I really enjoy how technology is helping statistics evolve and I really am interested in how skating has evolved as science learns more about skates and how to sharpen them.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
I do and it would be defence… you see the whole game develop before your eyes and Paul Coffey played defence.
