Los Angeles Kings March 2023 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Ramiro Mora Rico, I am the fifth and seventh grade physical education teacher at KIPP Corazon Academy Upper School. I am currently in my first year of teaching. My decision to become a teacher was inspired by a couple of my previous educators in middle and high school who always believed in me and pushed me to be the best version of myself. What I love the most about teaching is helping my students and watching them grow, whether it’s a particular skill in my class, a sport I coach or as individuals just knowing that I am making a positive impact in my students’ lives. As the current head coach of our school’s boy’s soccer team, I try to be involved in the community by seeking opportunities at our local parks and organizing more game and practice opportunities for our young athletes, both current and former. I collaborate with park organizations to give our students a safe place to practice and build their skill off of each other.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
My favorite is Anze Kopitar because he is a threat offensively and defensively. I am also a big fan of continuity and he has proven his loyalty and love for the Kings his entire career.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
My favorite part of the Future Goals program is seeing Physical Education taught through STEM in the game of hockey. A lot of times when it comes to PE you don’t see representation in modules, lessons, or activities in the classroom. I am currently going over bpm in my classroom and my students are able to make that connection amongst hockey players.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
If I were a hockey player I would definitely play goaltender. I really enjoy the thrill of stopping my opponent from scoring. Although it is a team sport I enjoy having the opportunity to play one on one versus someone and stop their shot.
