Los Angeles Kings March 2024 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
I’ve taught Middle School P.E. in Los Angeles just a few miles from the STAPLES center (Go Kings Go!) for 13 years. I started my teaching career in the classroom but quickly discovered that my passion was out on the field. It makes me happy to make kids happy and to organize activities for them every day where they are laughing and having fun while also learning about health and fitness. I think Physical Education is the best subject at school for kids this age. There are so many components to what we do that serve them for life and help shape the people they are becoming. Not only are we working on their personal growth and developing personal habits and mindsets, in PE, students also have the opportunity to socialize and collaborate in ways that are not available inside the classroom.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Dustin Brown! Two Stanley Cups and long time LA King!
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
The Future Goals Program is the first online program I’ve come across that incorporates STEM Content Standards AS WELL AS Physical Education Standards. As a PE teacher, it constantly feels as though we need to prove there are Math and Science concepts in what we teach. The Future Goals program demonstrates this so well. The games not only teach STEM concepts and assess the kids on content, they also allow them the kids to “play” by shooting pucks to learn angles or testing variables that affect
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
I’d play Center because that’s my teaching style. Getting “assists” by moving the puck to my co-workers, setting them up to succeed and shine.
