Toronto Maple Leafs October 2022 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Susan Jim, from Toronto, Canada. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I genuinely enjoy seeing success and growth in my students. I started out in my first job in high school teaching swimming. In university I taught fitness classes and also tutored elementary school students. From these varied experiences, I realized I loved working with children. I graduated and started teaching in an inner-city high-needs school. I am second generation Chinese-Canadian, and my immigrant parents were so thrilled to see me become a teacher. But, after 5 years of into teaching in a high-needs school, I burnt out and quit teaching. I eventually I did return to be a classroom teacher!
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Auston Matthews, Toronto Maple Leafs is my favorite player. He is one of the best younger players and is a leading scorer in the league! He is the start on my favorite hometown team, The Toronto Maple Leafs!
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
I love the application of math and physics (STEM) concepts in hockey. Through real-life hockey scenarios, students can understand that what they are learning in the classroom has real-world value (i.e. the calculating of ice surface area and volume). Students may not realize that there is math and science in sports and this may open up a whole world of new opportunity in their future.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
I would like to be goalie, so I can participate through most of the game. Everyone else gets a max 20 minutes of play, a goalie plays all 60 minutes.
