Tell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is Courtney Cann. I am a grade 4 teacher at Isabelle Sellon School in a beautiful little mountain town called Crowsnest Pass. I come from a looooong line of teachers; my great grandfather was actually a principal of one of the schools in our town. Funny enough, because of this, I was actually determined to NEVER become a teacher as I have always been a person who likes to challenge the status quo. But alas, I found myself sitting in front of my computer at the age of 19, needing to choose a faculty for my university application and the Faculty of Education was the only one that felt like a fit. I am blessed to have been able to teach both in Canada and abroad. My first teaching position was as an English teacher in South Korea, where I taught for two years. Since returning to Canada, I have taught ALL grades as a substitute teacher and grades 4-6 as a homeroom teacher. What I love most about teaching is getting to know my students. My goal each year is to find something that I truly admire in each of my students. As a certified life coach on the side, the thing that gets me most fired up in the classroom is helping my students discover their dreams and inner passions. It is so incredible to see the power, inspiration and excitement in their eyes when they connect to that side of themselves. Coming from a small mountain town and a family who volunteers A LOT, I find myself quite engaged in my community. Whether it be through school community projects, attending local markets and community events, volunteering, participating in community sports like curling, or making it out to the occasional council meeting, I love to be involved and connected. My favourite connection is the simple yet fulfilling exchange of hello’s to familiar faces while out and about. It is an honour to get to share about myself, my community and my students.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

I love that it get’s kids excited to learn!!! It reaches my students who need enrichment and support my students who need extra support. STEM is all about problem solving, innovation and learning through the process of doing. This is exactly what sport is all about too.

If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?

If I played hockey (which I never have outside of gym class in school), I for sure would want to be forward. To me, it seems like such a fast paced and exciting position. I also like all of the goal scoring opportunities!!
