Tell us about yourself!

I teach 7th grade STEM, part of my 35+ year as a teacher. I this class developed while working on my Doctorate. Through this, I learned the best time to get students interested in  the STEM fields is Middle School.

I’m a teacher due to my passion for learning. I  believe “”you learn something new every day”” and love to learn from everyone, young and old. The best part about teaching is watching students have their “”AHAH!!”” moment, when the code finally works or they  figure out how to balance an equation or when they are  amazed with the natural world.

I try to connect classes to the community as often as possible. This gives students  ownership of their lessons. School/community partnerships help bond our communities, fostering understanding of  differing opinions and backgrounds.

Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?

Bobby Orr. He changed the face of hockey through his speed, ability to read the ice, dedication to the sport and his continued support of the community, even though he has been long retired. He is a true role model.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

I love the fact that Future Goals showcases the science and mathematics used in everything. Before I taught STEM, I was a physical science teacher. I was always looking for ways to teach physical science topics without just relying on formulas and textbooks; using something the students enjoy and understand. Future goals does just that.

Hockey is a prime example of how STEM is used for everything. Materials science, geometry, freezing point are all examples of STEM in hockey.

If you played hockey, what position would you play?

I would be a goalie, because I believe I am a solid person who protects my team and strives to make others shine. These are qualities I see in a goalie.
