Detroit Red Wings April 2024 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
I come from a family of teachers, so it’s in my blood. I’ve always had an affinity towards math and I LOVE teaching teens! I worked with both middle schoolers and high schoolers in my career (since 1986) and have had FUN every step of the way! 🙂 I’ve been a math department chair and am currently our Algebra PLC leader. Over the years, I’ve taught just about every level of math, and for the past several years have taught Algebra and Project-Based Math. I’m always looking for new and relevant ways to teach my students different concepts. That’s how I came across Everfi. It’s provided me with some excellent resources for my students, especially my Project-Based math kids. Beyond math, I participate in our school’s mentoring program and have taken my mentees on various field trips.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
I like the real-world application problems and how students are not able to just guess at answers and move on. As for the STEM I see in hockey, I notice the geometry, stats, and a little algebra. I’m not much of a hockey fan, so there may be more, but I liked the Future Goals program.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Steve Yzerman. He was the star of our team when I was a lot younger!
