Classroom Team:
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I was hired to create a reading program. The teacher quit and the principal asked if I could teach the class. I come from a family of teachers so I said, ‘sure’. No one told me I had the roughest kids in school. They ate me up and spit me out. I was a temporary teacher at the time. I came back because on the last day of school, one of my students who had been moved to a continuation school, walked 3 miles, in 100 degree heat, in his cap and gown to take a picture with me. I came back the next year because I have never failed at a job and this student gave me hope that I could be successful. Here I am, 24 years later.
What has been your most memorable moment as a teacher?
Beginning of my career, teaching students that were in gangs, having a principal, etc. tell me not to invite trouble, me, inviting my parents to an all school award event, and handing out awards to students who deserved it. My parents walking to school, in colors, and were there for their kids, My tough kids, with tears in their eyes, when I handed them a reading award. This is what sticks in my mind the most. (PS also the look on my principal’s face)
What is your favorite part of Future Goals and how are you using it in your classroom?
Tough question. I really listen to my students too answer this. My student’s love the choices between math and science. I see that they go first to their preference and then switch. This year, we have used it a little slower to to COVID but I get the same reaction from last year. My favorite part is that the characters have Shark uniforms on and many love that relationship.
What was your student’s reaction to the program?
My student’s really enjoy and can relate to the Sharks. It is quite a conversation starter when hockey season is in. They love the engineering aspect the most. It relates to what we are doing in science especially with the creating of Rube Goldberg machines.
Who is your favorite hockey player?
Joe Thorton because when you watch him, you know he loves the game! Enthusiasm, skill, and hard work are presented when he plays. He always adds a little excitement to the game.
