Carolina Hurricanes February 2024 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Megan Furr and I currently teach 4th Grade! I have been teaching for seven years and have taught everything but 3rd and Kindergarten! The thing I love most about teaching is inspiring kids to read and find their passion through school! Outside of the classroom I coach Soccer to kids in our community!
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
I love Brent Burns on the Carolina Hurricanes because he every-time he steps on the ice he gives it his all. He has played many positions in his hockey career but has been most successful on defense and he provides a great example for my students of how to handle adversity when it comes to you! He faces every game with his best foot forward and he always gives it his all!
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
I think it is important to engage students in a way that is interesting for them! Math and Science can be difficult for some students and when you are able to show them that you can find Math and Science in a sport they like they become more interested! Hockey is all about STEM because you can use math to calculate how to score the perfect goal, it takes science to create the formula for the ice, and teams constantly use engineering and technology to make their team more successful on the Ice!
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
I would play goalie! Being a soccer player by nature, I am a natural in the goalie position so it calls my name but I am also not the best on the ice! I feel that putting myself in the goalie position gives me the opportunity to have a small window of defending while able to maintain my balance on the ice as well! Being in the goal also would allow me the best opportunity to help out my team as well as feel like I am the best protected!
