Chicago Blackhawks November 2022 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
I’ve been teaching in the same district I attended as a child for my entire career. I’ve worked as an Aide in Transitional Kdg, taught gr. 3,4,5 and 6, and 1 year at a Science Center. Most time was in 4th grade. I teach all subjects. I became a teacher because I love working with children. It’s very satisfying when students master a skill we have been working on, seeing excitement in their eyes when they figure something out is amazing! I’ve sponsored many clubs at school, most recently, a Kindness Club and Drama Club. I enjoy reading, snorkeling, Scuba diving, attending live sporting events, plays and musicals.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Jonathan Toews-I think he is an exemplary leader, and probably one of the best Captains ever in the NHL . His leadership and skill on the ice make his teammates better players. I don’t always see that with other captains. He has been consistent in this no matter what. His struggles have never interfered with his ability to be a great captain.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
My favorite part of the Future goals program is that it shows kids there are real world applications for math and science. Many times I hear things like, I’m not going to be a teacher or a scientist, why do I need to learn this. Kids also have some misconceptions about athletes and what they need to be successful. Tis program shows them math and science are everywhere.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
Well, I don’t know how to ice skate, so that would be a big hurdle…I think I would like to be a goalie if I could skate. As a child, I always thought they had cool helmets. They have to be ready for anything that comes their way, even though they are not skating all over they are constantly on alert watch all the action.
