Columbus Blue Jackets December 2022 Teacher of the Month
Tell us about yourself!
I teach 7th grade science. I have been teaching 35 yrs from 5th – 12th grade. I became a teacher when working for a park district on a historical farm and got a chance to work with a special needs boy. What I love most about teaching is seeing that aha moment in discovery. I volunteer as a coach for Special Olympics and was the youth pastor at my church for several years. I am married (41 years to Darlene) with 2 children (Jason & Karli). Jason is special needs whose favorite sport is in-line hockey. Karli is married (Chris) with 3 children (Patrick, Tucker, & Amelia). My grandchildren get much of my attention with their activities. I adore them greatly. We love to go fishing. I love playing sports but have been limited the last few years due to 2 knee replacements on the same leg. My most favorite sport to watch is hockey. I cannot ice skate though.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
The Future Goals program shows how math and science is present in the game of hockey. STEM is in every aspect of hockey. How players use the knowledge of science to hone their skills and game. How technology has impacted the equipment used in hockey.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Patrick Roy. His skills and ability seemed so effortless. He impacted the game to the positive for the teams he played for.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
A center. I have an uncanny ability to be able to see passes to be made and angles. I like being the person that leads the charge.
