Tell us about yourself!
My name is Pablo Flores and I am a 5th and 7th Physical Education Teacher. I have been teaching in urban schools for ten amazing years and I plan to continue doing so until I retire. Growing up as a timid kid, the experiences I had in Middle School PE helped me boost my confidence, self-esteem, change to a healthy lifestyle and build relationships. This is when I realized I wanted to teach MS Physical Education. But it took a while to find the right path. A teacher once discouraged me by telling me, “Teaching gym is not a real career” during a class discussion on future careers. Well here I am now, back in my own community making sure that MS students are getting the proper education, skills and tools in PE and bring awareness to physical and mental health, build confidence, social skills and dissolve the fact that some students still think PE is just about playing sports.
What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?
My favorite part about using the Future Goals program is that I get to align the lessons with our indoor hockey unit. Along with the students learning the basic physical skills needed to be successful in hockey, they’re also getting a deeper understanding on how speed, angles and numbers work behind the fun.
If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?
Defense – I feel like in every sport I have played in my life I always felt comfortable defending.
