Tell us about yourself!

Hi, my name is Kathlyn Breen. I have been teaching in Hamilton Township for 34 years. 15 of those years were spent at Sunnybrae Elementary school, where I taught first through fourth grade. During that time myself and another teacher began a Family Science program that ran for 8 years, before I left the school. At that time, I moved to Reynolds Middle and have taught both math and science in the 19 years that I have been here. About 6 years ago, I was involved in starting a STEM afterschool program for our 7th and 8th grade students. I am currently involved in using a new style of teaching in the classroom called LATIC (Learner Active Technology Infused Curriculum). I have been using this in my classroom for about 3 years now and have seen success in the student’s understanding of science. I became a teacher because I love working with children and love that “Aha” moment when they finally get something that they were struggling with. This is also true with the students that I work with at summer camp and through my religious education program. Thank you for considering me for this honor.

Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?

Martin Brodeur. He’s an amazing goal tender to watch. The game is more exciting with him in goal.

What is your favorite part of the Future Goals™program? How do you see STEM in the game of hockey?

I love that it is a fresh way for students to gain practice with their skills. The skill level changes with the students ability.

If you played hockey, what position would you play and why?

Goal or center. I like being in the center of the action
