Why did you decide to become a teacher?
After working 15 years in high tech, I left the field to stay home and raise my two children. While volunteering in their school, both a principal and a teacher, seeing that I had a passion for working with kids, suggested that I consider becoming a teacher; thus, I began my career in education.
What has been your most memorable moment as a teacher?
I don’t have just one memorable moment as a teacher; every day holds the possibility for such moments – and they are that frequent. I love observing students getting excited about something that they have just learned – igniting their passion for learning.
However, if I was to choose a moment that makes my ‘Top 5’ as a teacher, I would have to say it was when a student, who was a struggling student when he entered my class, graduated from high school with honors and credited me with his success. I don’t know that I did anything extraordinary, but believed in him, and eventually, he began to believe in himself. It’s often little things that can make a big difference.
What is your favorite part of Future Goals and how are you using it in your classroom?
I have been teaching STEM for over 18 years. I love that EverFi Future Goals uses real-world applications to help teach math and science and assist students in developing critical thinking skills, and that actual Sharks’ players and coaches present the program and engage students to help bring home the Stanley Cup. I love that my students are motivated to engage in both Future Goals programs during both their synchronous and asynchronous time while we are Distance Learning.
What was your student’s reaction to the program?
My students love both Future Goals Math and Science.
Who is your favorite player?
Patrick Marleau is a leader, he is an amazing team player and an inspiration, and he doesn’t let his success get the better of him. He always gives his best!
