Why did you decide to become a teacher?

Teaching is fun! It’s one of the few jobs where you have full autonomy in what goes on inside the classroom. You get to choose how you will be teaching units, discover new topics to bring up, and show students that learning doesn’t have to be boring. It also pushes you to be creative as what may have worked one year, may not work another with the new group of students. It’s especially rewarding when you see a student who might be struggling with a concept understand it.

What has been your most memorable moment as a teacher?

There have been many! A particular one was during a coding unit. The students were given a task to code a game with multiple levels, and missions to be completed in each level as their final assignment. It was amazing to see the creativity in these projects. Every single student in that class was so engaged – it was fantastic to see.

What is your favorite part of Future Goals and how are you using it in your classroom?

I love that the program links real life applications to the material we cover in class. The math one especially is well received as it gives students an opportunity to see concepts being used in such different ways. Students generally find math harder to apply in real life, so this program has definitely helped bridge that gap.

What was your student’s reaction to the program?

My students love it! The interactive games help reinforce the concepts and aid in building their self-confidence levels. They look forward to the Future Goals gaming times.

Who is your favorite player?

The Sedins! I think they have shown great leadership, and teamwork during their careers and treated everyone with respect. On the ice they displayed they were resilient and, in the community, they showed compassion and generosity. Through their philanthropy work, they’ve also raised and donated millions of dollars to the BC Children’s Hospital. They are true role models.
